Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir has been appointed as the new Chief of the General Staff of the IDF
Yesterday the 23rd Chief of the General Staff of the IDF, Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, stepped down from his position, as the 24th Chief of the General Staff of the IDF, Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, was appointed. After 40 years of service, LTG Herzi Halevi has decided to step down from his position.
After 17 months of war Israel’s security reality has changed on all fronts, but we are far from finished. Lieutenant General Zamir will take command of the IDF, and steer it forward - as he said yesterday in his first speech as the IDF Chief of Staff:
“This is an existential war. We will persist in our campaign to bring our hostages home and to defeat our enemies. The mission placed upon me from this day forward is clear: to lead the IDF to victory.”
LTG Eyal Zamir is a graduate of the College of Command and Staff and the National Defense College. He holds a bachelor’s degree and a master's degree in political science from the University of Haifa.
In 1984, he was drafted as a combat soldier in the Armored Corps, serving as a tank team commander, platoon commander, and company commander. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1994. From 1998-2000, he was the Operations Officer of the 162nd Armored Corps, followed by roles as Head of the Armored Corps Training and Doctrine Division and Commanding Officer of the 656th Armored Reserves Brigade (656) during Operation “Defensive Shield” (2000-2002).
From 2003-2005, he commanded the 7th Brigade. In 2007, he was promoted to Brigadier General and led the 90th Reserve Division and the Company and Battalion Commander’s Course (2007-2009). He then commanded the 36th Division (2009-2011) and served as Chief of Staff of the Ground Forces (2011-2012).
Promoted to Major General in 2012, he was the Military Secretary to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from 2012-2015.
In 2015-2018 he was appointed Commanding Officer of the Southern Command, 2018-2021 he was Deputy Chief of the General Staff and from 2023-2025 he was the Director General of the Israeli Ministry of Defense.
With such an esteemed resume and invaluable experience, LTG Eyal Zamir will lead by example and continue to ensure the safety of Israel and its citizens.
“To the families of the hostages, I want to say — the faces of your loved ones are ever before my eyes, as they are among the soldiers of the IDF, every moment. Our moral obligation is clear - to bring everyone home, by all means possible and as quickly as possible.
We will do everything to safely return the residents of the south and north to their homes.” - LTG Eyal Zamir
Till the next time,
