Romi, Emily and Doron are Home
The first 3 hostages released from Hamas captivity as part of the ceasefire agreement
Following over a year with far, far too few silver linings, it’s my pleasure to update the IDF Mission Brief community, after 471 days in Hamas’ brutal captivity…
Romi Gonen, Emily Damari and Doron Steinbrecher have returned home and will soon be reunited with their families.
Taking into account the operation we announced earlier today to bring back Staff Sergeant Oron Shaul, over ten years after he was killed and abducted (see linke below), 94 hostages now remain in Hamas captivity.
Our mission is not close to over.
Nor was this a true like for like exchange. These three women were abducted from a music festival and their homes then brutally held since. This is a huge difference when compared to the terrorists who are being released.
But their faces and the pictures of their releases is exactly what we are fighting for.
Romi Gonen, 24
Romi was dancing with her friends at the Nova Music Festival celebrating peace, love and unity, when Hamas terrorists invaded and attacked the festival, massacring, raping and abducting people from all around the world.
Emily Damari, 28
Emily, a dual Israeli and British citizen was abducted by Hamas terrorists from her quiet home in Kibbutz Kfar Aza. She was shot and injured.
Doron Steinbrecher, 31
Doron - a veterinary nurse - was brutally abducted while still in her pajamas from her home in Kibbutz Kfar Aza.
The horrors these 3 young women endured over the last 15 months is unimaginable. Today, I salute and embrace them and their families as they reunite after 471 days.
It is important for me to mention the brave soldiers, who gave their lives and those who were injured to ensure that this moment was possible.
We cannot and will not forget for a moment that 94 hostages - including women, children and elderly men - remain in Hamas captivity.
Our mission is not over until every single hostage comes home.
Mission Brief is a newsletter written by Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani, the Israel Defense Forces’ International Spokesperson.
